Multiplicity

A root $x^{\ast }$ has a multiplicity greater than 1 if both the function and its first derivative are zero at that point:

• $f(x^{\ast })=0$ (It’s a root)
• $f^{\prime }(x^{\ast })=0$ (The slope is zero)
